Common questions about pressure relief

Equipment to protect and control industrial processes: forward-acting, reverse-acting, composite and sanitary rupture discs with their holders and burst indicators; pressure and vacuum relief valves for tanks, emergency relief valves, deflagration and detonation flame arresters, vents, blanketing gas regulators, agitators, static mixers and Venturi steam traps. The full catalog is in the Products section.

We work with specialized international manufacturers: Continental Disc Corporation and LaMOT for rupture discs and holders, Groth Corporation for pressure and vacuum relief valves and flame arresters, United Equipment Technologies (UET) for agitators and mixers, and Steamloc for Venturi steam traps, among others.

It is a pressure relief device with no moving parts: a metal or composite membrane calibrated to burst at a specific pressure and temperature. When that pressure is reached it opens fully within milliseconds and vents the excess pressure from the vessel or pipe. Once it has acted it does not reclose, so it must be replaced.

A rupture disc is preferred when you need a tight seal (zero leakage), very fast response to sudden pressure rises, corrosive, viscous or polymerizing fluids, or sanitary service. A relief valve makes sense when the process must keep running after the event, because it recloses. In many cases both devices are combined.

Yes. It is a common combination: the disc isolates the valve from the process fluid, prevents leakage and protects its internals from corrosion or buildup. ASME Section VIII requires the space between the disc and the valve to have a pressure gauge, try cock, free vent or telltale indicator to detect a burst or leak, so that pressure does not build up between them.

In a forward-acting disc the pressure acts on the concave side and the material works in tension until it bursts. In a reverse-acting disc the pressure acts on the convex side, the dome reverses and opens against knife blades or score lines. Reverse-acting discs usually allow operation closer to the burst pressure and handle pressure cycling better; the right choice depends on the application.

Line size, required burst pressure and the temperature at that pressure, normal operating pressure, whether there is vacuum or back pressure, fluid and phase (gas, vapor or liquid), disc and holder material, connection or flange type, the standard required by the project and quantity. If you have the vessel data sheet or the model of the current disc, send them and we will help you identify the replacement.

The most widely used are ASME Section VIII for pressure vessels, the ISO 4126 series (part 2 covers rupture disc safety devices and part 6 their application, selection and installation), API 520 for sizing and installation and API 521 for pressure-relieving and depressuring systems. Tell us the standard of your project so we can select a model that meets it.

There is no single interval: it depends on how close to the burst pressure the disc operates, pressure and temperature cycles, corrosion and the manufacturer recommendations. Many plants replace it preventively at every scheduled shutdown. It is always replaced after it bursts and, in general, a disc that has been removed from its holder is not reinstalled.

It is a device that lets gas or vapors flow through but stops flame propagation by cooling it in a metal element. It is installed on storage tank vents, vapor recovery lines and burners. It is selected by gas group and by type of event: deflagration or detonation.

Chemical and petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, gas and mining. In each of them we help protect vessels, tanks and piping against overpressure, vacuum, flame and dust explosions.

Yes. We offer sanitary rupture discs from Continental Disc, such as the SANITRX lines, designed for clamp connections and hygienic processes in the pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries.

No. The price depends on the configuration of each device (size, pressure, temperature, materials and certifications), so we quote each request based on the application. You can request a quote by phone, WhatsApp, email or through the contact form.
